Massive Tree Models Library: In-house at Alpine, we have developed hundreds of realistic 3D models representing the five most common commercial tree species in interior California, as well as one hardwood species. Trees progress to a new, unique model every time they grow one inch or progress five years as a snag. Our level of detail and realism in forest visualization is simply unparalleled, and our library of trees is growing everyday.
Flexible Forest Composition: Currently in VFP, the terrain is fixed, but the trees are not. This allows us to provide a detailed and realistic base terrain while allowing for a wide variety of scenarios in forest management. Load one of our pre-built forests onto the terrain or build your own. It is already possible to customize a forest using stand tables from real data in order to visualize and simulate a genuine situation.
Individual Tree Growth and Monitoring: Individual trees grow at their own rate, leading to realistically diversified stand structure. Meanwhile, each tree is accounted for independently in all inventory statistics. Group selections and even individual tree selections are precisely accounted for in harvest volume and residual inventory.
Real-time Inventory and Wildlife Monitoring: Our individual tree monitoring allows VFP to calculate and track any statistic in the forest. View useful data in tables, in graphs, on the map, and even as you walk through a stand. We also track statistics used for California Wildlife Habitat Relationships (WHR) and plan to incorporate this into a system for wildlife interactions in VFP.
Flexible Growth Models: Growth can be tuned to represent local perceptions or existing models. Tree growth considers tree size, site class, and stand density. The growth model also includes some natural variation to contribute to stand diversification. Ingrowth and mortality are accounted for and can be adjusted as well. The default grow is calibrated to align with CACTOS Region 2 for second growth mixed conifer.
Flexible Management Horizons: The management horizon in VFP can be anywhere from 5 years to 100+ years. Start in year zero (denoted as 1970), make management decisions, grow the forest forward five years, and repeat until satisfied.
Expansive Options for Silviculture: VFP contains limitless management options covering a wide variety of silvicultural systems. Decide on a silviculture type, then mark trees from a graph, draw harvest boundaries on the terrain, use canopy spacing selection, mark/unmark individual trees, or use any combination of these methods.
Options for even age systems include pre-commercial and commercial thins, salvage harvests, clearcuts with or without retention, and shelterwood/seed tree treatments.
For uneven age management, the user has precise control over unit-scale selection harvests, multi-unit selection harvests, group selection, or even individual tree selection.
Expansive Options for Reforestation: After harvest, let nature provide ingrowth or make decisions on a reforestation strategy. Choose an option for site prep, decide on a species composition, and select a planting density. Plant an entire unit, only selected interplant areas, or everything except a retention area.
Logging Simulations: As an option, watch the trees fall and be bucked into logs. Observe large trees damage small residual trees in a mixed age stand. Lastly, view the logs in a sort yard to gain a perspective for what comes out of a given harvest.
Wildfire Simulations: Our most recent feature is the incorporation of fire. In real-time, watch a fire spread over the landscape, engulf trees, and turn them into blackened snags.
